Hail Corvus,
Brigade Practice was held yesterday at Allied Gardens. We had the best Corvus
turn out that I can remember with 27 fighters in attendance. We were by far the
largest group on the field and it was an impressive site.
We started the day going through our new maniple formations and everyone is
beginning to look very good. I can't wait till we have the opportunity to run
the formation with full strength where the maniples have depth. It should be a
truly devastating combination. After the usual unit marching and Brigade marching
we went to the open field area where we practiced marching into fire. Once again
the drill proved that if we stay together and do not break up our lines we can
press other units steadily backward. I received numerous compliments that we
have become very hard to kill and that we are covering up very well. Both George
Landcaster and Duke Avery were very complimentary about our performance in this area.
We then went on to some open field fighting. Since we were so large, it was
basically Corvus with some odds and sods lined up against the rest of the Iron
Brigade. After the first open field battle Dirk walked away and said; "Damn
Corvus...excellent work best I have ever seen you." as we handily won the fight.
We lost the next two battles as we tried to shift our maniple from the right to
the left side and it threw off our timing. Also once we relied on our allies to
hold our flank and they just could not hold. We then moved back to our usual
formation and began winning again. Considering how many new guys we fielded we
made an excellent account of ourselves against some very battle hardened units
in Drafn, The Orkneys, the Myrmidons, Duntyr and the Romani and Gryphons. The
lessons really were: 1) keep battle awareness and do not stop while there is one
enemy left alive. 2) Practice with our sticks, as we charge and cover very well
but need to improve our ability to kill with our swords. 3) stay aggressive and
seize the initiative. We are much better going forward into the enemy than
trying to fight defensively and react to enemy charges.
After the open field battles we fought on the bridge. We tried a couple of holding
tactics and were picked apart a bit but learned a lot. Then we put together our
regular bridge formation and expectedly took the fight right down the enemy's
throat time after time. It was glorious. No one...NO ONE can stand up to us
when we go into this mode of fighting. Perhaps the most telling comment came from
Hamster who had not been around for a while. He was simply in awe of how good
we have become.
We then broke away from the Iron Brigade and did drills designed to work on our
weaker areas. It was very productive as I can see us getting better week after week.
Please try to attend Sunday fighter practices as often as you can so that we can
continue to work to improve our sword skills.
Attendees were: Dannicus, Romulus, Karl, Bruno, Hothgar, Valrik, Gunteric, Jeheava,
Jackus, Hamster, Cybian, Kafli, Asa, Jesse, Fastillius, Nate, Chrispian, Runwulf,
Suby, Skeia, Drew, Mike (a friend of Nate's) and Tim (who has joined us the last
few weeks). Attending but unable to fight were: Bedwyr, Adamus, Ratticus, and Lars.
All in all an excellent and educational day. If this is any indication of how
the war is going to go......DAMN!
50 at May!
